Sulphuric acid : Description and use
Formerly known as oil of vitriol or fuming sulphuric acid, sulphuric acid is a mineral acid. Its strength (pKa = -3.0) is exceeded by only a few superacids.
Concentrated sulphuric acid is not to be confused with fuming sulphuric acid, also known as oleum. The latter is a solution of 10 to 80% sulphur trioxide in anhydrous sulphuric acid.
Sulphuric acid is also available in the form of aqueous solutions in various concentrations. The acid used in lead-acid batteries has a content of under 51%.
Flammability: Sulphuric acid is a non-flammable liquid, which takes the form of a hygroscopic, oily, colourless and odourless liquid. However, if sulphuric acid comes into contact with combustible materials it can produce enough heat to cause a fire. Sulphuric acid reacts with most metals, especially if water is present, releasing hydrogen, a flammable and explosive gas.
